How to estimate the size you need
The quickest way to size a unit is to count, not guess. Walk through what you're storing in three buckets: rooms of furniture, large single items (refrigerator, washer and dryer, sofa, mattress sets, riding mower), and boxes. As a rough rule, each furnished bedroom you're emptying tends to need somewhere around 50 to 75 square feet of floor space once things are stacked, plus a little extra for the big appliances and anything awkward that won't stack.
Then add an aisle. The most common sizing mistake is filling a unit wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, only to realize you can't reach the box you need without unloading everything in front of it. If you'll be coming back for items before your final move-out, leave a narrow walking path down the middle and size up one notch. If it's pure long-term storage you won't touch until you collect it all, pack tighter and size down.
Two things specific to our facility are worth planning around. First, every unit here is drive-up and ground-level, so you pull a truck or trailer right to the door and you're not budgeting space or time for elevators and hallways. Second, units are not climate-controlled. That keeps the pricing affordable and straightforward, but it means electronics, candles, certain plastics, leather, and anything moisture-sensitive should be packed in sealed bins rather than open boxes, which can change how tightly you stack.
Small units (5x10): the smallest size, for closets, dorms and seasonal gear
Our smallest drive-up unit is the 5x10 (about 50 sq ft), and it's the workhorse for short lists. Think of it as a closet-on-wheels. It's the classic apartment overflow or dorm-room size, holding a studio's worth of furniture, a mattress set stood on edge, a small couch, several stacked boxes, and seasonal gear. If your list is just a few totes of holiday decorations, a small dresser, and the boxes that won't fit in a coat closet at home, the 5x10 still gives you room to spare. There's nothing smaller in our lineup, so if you're unsure, this is the most economical place to start.
The 5x10 is also a popular pick for students storing a dorm or apartment over the summer (see our ULM student storage page for details), and for West Monroe and Bawcomville households clearing out a single room to stage a home for sale or stashing yard-sale and seasonal items between uses.
- 5x10 (~50 sq ft): our smallest unit. Studio or dorm contents, a one-room declutter, mattress set plus small sofa plus boxes
- Also fits the short list: holiday decor, a few totes, small furniture, sports gear, golf clubs
Medium units (10x10): 1-bedroom apartments and two rooms
The 10x10 (about 100 sq ft) is where most apartment and small-house moves land. It's the go-to for a one-bedroom apartment or two rooms of furnishings. A queen or full bedroom set, a living room (sofa, chairs, TV stand, a few lamps), a dining table, and a wall of boxes, with room left to walk in. It's a common choice when a family is consolidating during a renovation or a between-homes gap.
If you've got a fuller one-bedroom, a lot of boxes, or the bulky appliances that fill a unit fast (a refrigerator, washer and dryer, multiple mattress sets), you may find yourself bumping right up against the walls of a 10x10. In that case it's usually worth stepping up to a 10x20 rather than cramming. Because these are drive-up units, loading the heavy appliances is a straight push from the truck, with no corners or elevators to fight.
Large units (10x20 and 10x30): full households and business inventory
The large drive-up units handle whole-home moves and business needs. A 10x20 (about 200 sq ft, roughly the footprint of a one-car garage) typically holds a three-bedroom house. Appliances, multiple bedroom sets, living and dining furniture, and the full box count of a family move. A 10x30 (about 300 sq ft) steps up to larger households: a four-bedroom-plus home, or a move where you'd otherwise need two smaller units.
These larger units are also a practical fit for small businesses in the West Monroe and Monroe I-20 area. Contractors stage tools, ladders, and material. Retailers and online sellers hold overstock and seasonal inventory. Reps store equipment and trade-show gear. All of it gets drive-up access for quick load-in and load-out, plus 24-hour access for off-hours runs. One note: these units fit a vehicle's worth of belongings, but the facility offers drive-up storage units and does not advertise dedicated vehicle, RV, or boat parking.
Extra-large unit (20x30): our biggest option
At about 600 square feet, the 20x30 is the largest unit we offer. It's roughly the footprint of a two- or three-car garage and the right call when even a 10x30 would leave you tight. It's built for the biggest jobs: a full large or multi-bedroom household with all its appliances, furniture, and boxes, a major move you'd otherwise have to split across two or more units, or a household combining several homes worth of belongings into one place. Because it's a single open drive-up space, that 600 square feet stays usable. You're not losing room to interior walls or hallways.
On the business side, the 20x30 suits operations that have outgrown a smaller unit. Contractors storing larger equipment and bulk material, retailers and online sellers holding substantial overstock and seasonal inventory, and trades that need real room to stage and rotate stock with drive-up, 24-hour access. To keep 600 square feet manageable, plan a center aisle and a couple of cross-paths so you can reach the back without unloading the front. Remember the unit is drive-up and ground-level, not a vehicle, RV, or boat parking space.
- 20x30 (~600 sq ft): our largest unit. A full large or multi-bedroom household, a combined move, or substantial business and contractor storage
- Leave a center aisle so a space this size stays easy to navigate
Why drive-up sizing is easy to load
Drive-up, ground-level access changes the math on every size. No elevators to wait for, no narrow interior hallways to angle a couch through, and no long carry from a loading dock. You pull your truck or trailer right up to your unit and move things in a few feet. That makes a 10x20 feel less daunting than the same square footage spread across a multi-floor building, and it means you can often get by with a slightly smaller unit because you're not wasting space on awkward interior maneuvering.
The trade-off to plan for is climate. These units are not climate-controlled, which keeps them affordable but means you should pack for outdoor temperature and humidity swings. Use sealed plastic bins instead of open boxes for anything sensitive. Keep electronics and photos in protective wrapping. Lift contents off the slab on a pallet or boards if you're storing long-term, and leave a little airflow rather than shrink-wrapping everything tight. That protective packing adds a bit of bulk, so give yourself a little margin when you're on the line between two sizes.
Still unsure? How to reserve the right unit
When you're between two sizes, the month-to-month lease is your safety net. There's no long-term contract, so if you guess small and run out of room, or guess big and want to trim costs, you can move to a different unit later, subject to what's available at the time. Many renters start one size up for a move, then downsize after they've offloaded what they don't need.

"Storage unit size FAQ"
What size storage unit do I need for a 1-bedroom apartment?
For a typical one-bedroom apartment, a 10x10 unit (about 100 square feet) is the most common fit. It holds a queen or full bedroom set, a living room's worth of furniture, a dining table, and a stack of boxes, with enough room to walk in and reach things. If your apartment is sparsely furnished or you're not storing the big appliances, our smallest unit, the 5x10 (about 50 square feet), may do the job. If you have a lot of boxes or oversized furniture, consider sizing up to a 10x20. All of these are drive-up, ground-level units, so loading is a straight push from your truck or trailer.
What's the difference between a 10x10 and a 10x20 unit?
A 10x20 is exactly double the floor space of a 10x10, 200 square feet versus 100. In practical terms, a 10x10 suits a one-bedroom apartment or two rooms of furniture, while a 10x20 (roughly a one-car-garage footprint) suits a full three-bedroom house including appliances, multiple bedroom sets, and the full box count of a family move. If you're between the two, remember you can leave an aisle and still fit more in the 10x20, and our month-to-month lease lets you adjust later if you over- or under-estimate.
Will a 10x30 or 20x30 fit a full house worth of furniture?
Yes. A 10x30 (about 300 square feet) handles full households comfortably. A four-bedroom-plus home, or a move you'd otherwise split across two smaller units, including appliances, several bedroom sets, living and dining furniture, and a large number of boxes. For the very biggest jobs, like a large multi-bedroom household, a combined move, or substantial business inventory, our 20x30 (about 600 square feet) is the largest unit we offer. Because both are drive-up and ground-level, you can load even a unit this size quickly by pulling right up. With a footprint this large, leave a center aisle so you can reach everything without unloading the front first.
Are all units drive-up and ground-level?
Yes. Every unit at Cypress Mini Storage is a drive-up, ground-level unit. You pull your vehicle or trailer right up to your unit and load in a few feet, with no elevators, no stairs, and no long interior hallways. That makes loading and unloading faster and easier at every size. It's one reason renters often find they can use a slightly smaller unit here than in a multi-floor building, since there's no space lost to interior maneuvering.
Are any units climate-controlled?
No. Cypress Mini Storage offers drive-up units that are not climate-controlled. This keeps our pricing affordable and straightforward, and it's a great fit for furniture, appliances, tools, business inventory, and general household goods. For items that are sensitive to heat or humidity, like electronics, photos, certain plastics, leather, and candles, we recommend packing in sealed plastic bins rather than open boxes, keeping things off the slab on a pallet or boards, and allowing a little airflow. If you plan around that, non-climate drive-up storage works well for the vast majority of belongings.
Can I switch to a different size unit later on a month-to-month lease?
Yes. We rent month-to-month with no long-term contract, so if your needs change you can move to a different size, subject to what's available at the time. Many renters intentionally start one size up during a move and then downsize once they've cleared out what they don't need, or size up if they realize they're tight on space. Current availability and pricing are shown live on our online booking page, so you can check what's open before you decide. New renters can also use promo code WELCOME50 for 50% off the first two months.
